Charleston, South Carolina
Because none of us had been to South Carolina before, we all decided to go to Charleston to see the city and drive up and down the coast from there. We had some bad weather delays but eventually Felicia, Susie, Larry, and I flew into Charleston and stayed there for a week while we saw the city.
We stayed in the town of Mount Pleasant across the river from Charleston and we were very close to good beaches, historical sites, and very good Southern food.

We took a harbor tour of Charleston to see the town from the water that is all around the town. Not only is Charleston on the Atlantic coast, it sits between two rivers so there are plenty of bridges, coastline, boats, marshes and beaches.
Our plan was to leave early on a Saturday morning, but an early morning lightning storm and the unexpected Charleston Air Show delayed our flights, cancelled our flights, and kept us in DFW for 12 hours until we gave up and went home. Because the air show was on Sunday also, we left early on Monday and had no problems flying in then. Bad on AA for selling tickets to an airport that is closed for its annual air show.
We drove 2 hours south to Savannah, Georgia and spent one day sightseeing there. We took a 90-minute guided tour of Savannah and picked some areas that we wanted to visit and look at more. I was very impressed that the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) was all over Savannah and doing well. We have a friend who is attending SCAD and it is a lot more integrated into the city than I had thought.
We ate a lot of seafood, shrimp, grits, shrimp and grits, pimento cheese grits and biscuits and we had time to spend on three different, empty beaches.
While we were in Charleston, we took a tour boat to Ft. Sumter, where the Civil War started, and walked around for one hour. That was not long enough. We also walked around Ft. Moultrie, on Sullivan’s Island.
