Picture of downtown Manama from my room in the
Sheraton Hotel. We always stayed on the Executive
floor and there was a good view of downtown, the
Persian Gulf and the swimming pool from up there.
The Manama Sheraton is very nice but it has a
lot of unidentified appliances in it
I have been to a lot of places around the world and am
used to seeing McDonalds, Pizza Hut, KFC, etc. But I
have never seen any Dairy Queens until I was in Bahrain.
There are 3 DQs and after a week, a hamburger sure
sounds nice. I think a Texas oilman must have missed
Dairy Queen and opened up the chain in Bahrain.
The Persian Gulf is very nice looking and Bahrain
has a wide variety of good seafood. The diving is
supposed to be pretty good, the Germans went
out diving for a day but I did not know how so I
stayed at the hotel.
These are wooded dhows. The dhow is made
by hand using tools similar to an axe much as
it was hundreds of years ago. It is sort of funny
to see that although they are 500 years old and
made the old way, they all have a modern radar
This is a picture of the Tree of Life, which is very famous
in Bahrain. There are not so many trees and this one is
supposed to be the oldest. I did not take this photo,
scanned it from a postcard
The souk in Manama where you can buy gold, silver,
cloth, clothes, spices, coffee and souvenirs. Although
there are some modern malls, this is a lot of fun unless
you get lost. The alleys split off in all directions and it
is very easy to get lost in there. I got my picture taken
for my new drivers licence there
Once you leave Manama, the rest of the island is a desert
that is the color of sand. There are some fenced in villas
and compounds that house the expatriates, mostly Brits
and Germans. I went to visit Mr. Mack and his wife and
they lived in a marble villa with a tennis court. Marble floor,
walls and ceiling and it was open so that the wind blew
through it. It seemed to stay very cool.
If you forgot to pack anything, I recommend shopping here.
I stopped at this store several times as it was by where I was
working. I think it is fun just to walk around inside and look
at the different items that are in different countries.
