| Maui is made from two volcanoes that grew together to form two high volcanoes with a low valley between them. We drove up to the top of the highest one, Haleakala, which is 10,300 feet above sea level and is not easy to get to. Clouds always hang on the mountain at about 6000 feet so you can't normally see the top from the beaches or valley. When you finally get to the top, it looks like you are on the moon. There are many craters and very little vegetation at all - there is only sharp lava rock. Also at the top is a park ranger station and two observatories. You can take some good hikes if you are tough enough and have very good boots that the lava rock won't eat up, we saw several horse tours. It was cool enough at 10,000 feet that Kendra and many others wore a jacket in August. |
