Australia - Blue Mountains - July 2013 - Page 4
Notice the menu and the
"Giant Rump". I would have
gone in and had one but I
had just finished eating a
hamburger with beets,
pineapple and a fried egg
on top. Beets seems to be
the substitute for pickles in
Australia
After spending 3 days at Cairns and looking through the rain forest and the Great Barrier Reef, we flew back down to Sydney and
rented another car. This was my first left hand driving through a big city and Sydney is very big. I was pretty nervous, but drove the same
way everybody else did. We drove about 100 miles west of Sydney to the Blue Mountains and stopped at the thriving city of Katoomba.
Katoomba is the sightseeing center of the Blue Mountains. It was cold there and damp. This was the first time that we had really felt
like winter and you can see from the temperture photo that it was getting near freezing each night. Felicia liked it, I liked the shorts
and t-shirt weather up north in the Cairns area. Felicia had book us a few night staying in a bed and breakfast in a 100 year old guest
house. When we got there, we found out that they did not turn on the heat until 5 PM to save money. Everyone in Katoomba wore
heavy sweaters and coats. Katoomba also felt like the edge of civilazation to me.
Downtown Katoomba on the left, showing the main street. No it is
not empty like this all day long, Felicia took a very early morning walk
looking for some coffee.
In Katoomba we stayed at the Kurrara Guesthouse, which is over
100 years old. It was a nice place with excellent breakfast and
free port wine. It was also close to all of the Blue Mountain
sightseeing points.
Blue Mountains
At the Blue Mountains, we visited the Three Sisters, hiked up and down what I think my be Australia's
version of the Grand Canyon, and took a lot of scenic pictures. We took railroads and trams across
the valley and looked over a lot of steep cliffs. We also saw some wild animals like the one on the
right - long shaggy hair and wrinkled leather-like skin.
